From Grief to Giggles: The Power of a Support Squad
After having a death in my family, my husband of sixty-two years, I have discovered several ways to be resilient. It is traumatic enough, but having family and friends engulf you helps you to recover more quickly from a hardship or traumatic event. Another way would be to get out of the house and do an activity that has been put on the back burner. Such activity could be anywhere from lunches with old friends, movies, or getting together with those we have shoved away due to heavy schedules.
An example of that is at the time of my husband’s death my entire family was present to just be with me or to take on the many tasks that this can entail. The night of the funeral, my six grandchildren arrived with pillows and blankets in hand and announced that we would have a pajama party at my house. They did not want me to be alone during this difficult period.
It also helped to have friends and relatives stop by if only for a hug and an encouraging word.
These gestures helped me to recover and become resilient. There will be many obstacles to come into my life, but just knowing I have a wonderful support team will help to make my life somewhat normal, and will
allow me to get back on track if for only daily tasks. This will also help down the road with larger, more difficult happenings, but being surrounded by caring people certainly makes the situation more manageable.
I am told I am a tough old girl. We’ll see how much resilience I have.
