Trash to Treasures
One of the interests of the Sidetracked Sisters is crafting. In the past we have had several home shows where we display and sell our creations.
I found it quite amazing the talent these Sidetracked Sisters came up with. They were so original and I felt they created neat and original items. My interest in crafting was usually done making wreaths, swags, broken pots, and creating anything I could think of. I especially like working with pine, weeds, evergreens, and flowers. The downfall of creating items in the winter is only artificial items can be used. I prefer working with fresh flowers and other fresh items to make different arrangements but have to work with the seasons.
When doing crafts we all seemed to have our specialty. The fun items that I liked to work with were broken pots. I came up with this interest by accident. I was working on an arrangement and the pot broke. I almost threw it away but decided to work with it the way it looked after being broken. I found that broken strawberry pots are especially fun to work with. When Working With a broken pot you are forced to work more with the pot rather than just sticking flowers, weeds, or pine in the natural way. With a broken pot, you have little crevices and cracks that you can work with.
Now, I’m not so sure that this is a really popular art. I believe it is felt that if the pot is broken, the arrangement is something anyone can do. People tend to not be able to look at the idea that this pot is broken. Finding a natural broken pot that would work when putting in arrangements is also a lot harder. I have tried to break pots to help with this process. For some reason, it is not the same as finding one naturally broken.
You find yourself crawling under trash piles, in places where no one usually goes, to find these “original” broken pots. Just this summer while leaving a plant store there was this very large teal pot that was obviously broken and was only partly there. You find yourself bartering for a broken item and get strange looks from someone who intended to throw this item away. Well, I took that pot home, placed it in the ground, and planted an arrangement oozing out of it.
This is fun and a challenge, and I will continue to be on the lookout for that special broken pot.
