What is All the Fuss About?

entertainmentWhen I was a kid I believe I was about eight years old the excitement was in the air.  We are going to get a TV.  Some of my friends already had this up to date for entertainment and I couldn’t wait.  Well, to say I was disappointed was the truth.  I remember walking up the stairs in the house I grew up in.  The TV was positioned at the far end of the living room.  It was turned on and I was appalled.

It was black and white.  Not only that, but there were some adult programs on it such as the news—things for adults.  I thought we would be viewing programs like movies at the showhouse.  You know, Bambi, Mickey Mouse, and a wonderful entertaining film.  Well, I went on upstairs thinking what is all the fuss about?

Then I must say I had to get used to programs being black and white, but I had fun programs that I got into like Donna Reed, I Dream of Jeannie, Bewitched, Father Knows Best, Leave it to Beaver, etc.

I was blown away when I went to one of my neighborhood friends to see their new color TV.  I thought they must be really rich.  This consisted of a plastic sheet with stripes of different colors.  Now these colors didn’t change with the picture.  For example, the faces were always red, the body yellow, the bottom green, and so forth.

entertainmentBoy, when I think about that I can’t believe how naive people can be.  To add to the richness of my friends they had two tvs.  One in the living room and one in the basement.  The one in the basement didn’t have the color sheet.  That probably cost way too much.

I did spend a fair amount of time watching TV from 9 – 12 on Saturday mornings when I could talk my mom out of making me go to catechism.  Those Saturday morning headaches are a bitch.
