One’s Not Enough

  • Wife: “Can we have one more pup?”
  • Husband: “No”
  • Wife: “Wouldn’t it be fun to have one more dog?”
  • Husband: “No”
  • Wife: “Our Emma is so good, but she is lonesome don’t you think?”
  • Husband: “No”
  • Wife: “Look at this picture, isn’t this puppy adorable?”
  • Husband: Head nodding yes
  • Wife: “How about we get this pup?”
  • Husband with the start of dementia:  “Sure!!!!!!”

Well, that is how it went.  So, during the coldest month of the year, January, we brought home Emma’s little sister, Ivy.  She was the cutest little fluff ball I could imagine.  She had long black ears and was the color of white, black, and tan.  This is called a tri-color English Springer Spaniel.  She has an added feature and that is that she is heavily ticked.  This makes her a little darker than her sister who is also a tri-color, being black, tan, and white.  Ivy is a bench Springer (I think means with longer ears, and Emma is a field Springer, with shorter ears.)  Ivy has grown to be about ten pounds lighter than her sister, coming in at a whopping 44 pounds, while Emma is 57 pounds.

Let’s face it, when people talk about getting a kitten they seem to focus on a pair.  After all, they like to play with each other.  Well, this goes for dogs as well.

springer spanielThis is one of the best decisions I (we) could have made.  Even though she was a little harder to potty train than I was used to, she finally came through.  She is a clown.  She never runs out of energy, loves to play with toys, runs our racetrack in the backyard, jumps up on people she is not supposed to and loves to torment her sister.  She loves standing around the corner by the stairs, jumping out, and biting Emma’s ears when they go up or down stairs.

I love that she has to know where I am at all times, searching for me if it should happen to be out of her sight.  She likes to be talked to and played with, and is a great snuggler.

We favor English Springer Spaniels.  Ivy is our fourth one.  I thought it would be fun to have one of each color, and then I wanted a matching pair, but when I saw Ivy’s picture on Facebook there was no question.

Thankfully my husband gets as much enjoyment out of our two furry friends as I do.  There was a time when he would accidentally let the dogs out to run without leashes, but after the purchase of a vibrating collar that problem is now under control

Happiness at our house comes in twos.
