Big Ass Hair

big ass hairThere were so many fads of the 80s that I tended to follow.  I had Care Bears, a Cabbage Patch Doll, a Boom Box, Neon clothes and accessories, talked like a Valley Girl, went to the Video Arcade for fun, and… had BIG ASS HAIR!  This is one thing that immediately makes me think of the 80s.  From rock stars to television personalities, everyone seemed to embrace the motto: the bigger, the better.

Big hair in the 1980s was more than just a hairstyle; it was a cultural phenomenon. I didn’t have the traditional towering bouffant of some, but my bangs stood about 2 inches off of my head.  I would curl them and spray significant amounts of hairspray.  Arrange a bit more and spray more hairspray.  Repeat again and again until perfect.  My bangs could withstand a hurricane without moving.  The problem was if you ever needed to brush your hair, it would end up with little white chunks of hairspray that would only disappear by showering.

I don’t recall what inspired me to start this style, but for others, it was brought about by pop and rock stars like Madonna, Cyndi Lauper, Bon Jovi, and Def Leppard who all had larger-than-life hairstyles.  Additionally, TV shows like “Dynasty” and “Dallas” showcased glamorous characters whose voluminous hairstyles were as dramatic as their on-screen plotlines.

I no longer sport the teased, curled, and gelled style from the 80’s.  Today, I’m lucky if I do much of anything with it!  I think back to the amount of time that I spent in front of the mirror making sure that my hair was just right and I’m thrilled that times have changed!
