Where to Start
Spring and fall house cleaning always seemed overwhelming to me. The thought of ripping everything apart twice a year seemed like just too much work. I had an aunt who helped to put my anxiety at ease. She said she would thoroughly clean whatever needed it at the time and did not tear the house apart to accomplish spring and fall cleaning.
I have a lot of things I would like to get rid of whether it be for spring or fall house cleaning. One is we have two cars. My husband and I are now retired. Having two cars offers a luxury that we don’t need. We are very seldom using both cars at the same time. It just so happens that the car I feel needs to go is my husband’s vehicle. It is the oldest, has the most miles and it is time to get rid of it. This is a hard thing to do as it represents independence and convenience. It is an SUV and has been handy when hauling larger items, filling it with plants, and many other larger items. It is handy to have a little larger vehicle. I feel we have certainly got our use out of this car, but there is an emotional attachment to get over. It is also not cost-effective to have it just sitting in our driveway. It is my husband’s vehicle and it is hard to let it go.
When you get to a ripe old age it is hard to get rid of stuff. As they say, “You spend your life wanting, acquiring, and then getting rid of all the stuff”. Just think of the money that could be saved if the items now being disposed of were never purchased.
I also have clothes to dispose of as they are out of style, never worn, and only worn when I was working. That is always a challenge as you feel like you might have an occasion to wear them, but it ends up they just keep taking up space in your closet.
Another item in our house that needs getting rid of is old paint cans and pieces of “stuff” in my husband’s workshop. I might see this as a place for the necessary disposal of many items, but that might not be shared with the person I share this house with!
