My Broomstick Horse
When I was a kid I don’t remember having many toys. We had the staples such as roller skates, ice skates, a bike, and a doll or two. I also had a metal dollhouse and paper dolls. But, the one thing I had was a good imagination.
I can truthfully say that my imagination was my best toy, together with an old broom handle. I had a particular girlfriend who I would play with using my beloved broom, which substituted for my make-believe horse. It was so cool to go galloping around the neighborhood, on the sidewalks, in backyards, in gardens, and just about anywhere. This sounds so silly, but to me, it was really fun. While galloping on my pretend horse it felt so real. Going so fast, the wind in my hair, and making the sound of my horse was the best feeling.
I could also enjoy this special activity in all the seasons. My broomstick horse did not have a real head on it like the toy horses today, so my imagination had to work overtime. I would have to pretend campfires and would have to tie up my horse. I imagine this was to catch my breath from all my galloping.
Can you just see the kids of today getting the thrill of a broomstick for a horse and galloping around the neighborhood? I can’t quite imagine this without a giggle.
Later, I put together a horse on a stick for my youngest daughter for a school play. But, actually my old broomstick horse suited me just fine and was a lot easier to handle and behaved a lot better too!!!!
