Less is More
I am a holiday purist to the fullest extent.
I have a pet peeve. I believe each holiday should be celebrated one at a time. When one holiday has ended it is time to start the next. Now, I think leaving decorations a couple of days after the holiday is o.k., but then it is time to move forward.
It is fun to decorate for the holidays, but “less is more”. It is not necessary to fill up each inch of your yard with an item for the special day. I like to decorate for Halloween. There are so many fun things to work with. Unfortunately, sometimes time gets away from me and this holiday can be overlooked unless little kids are involved. The creative pumpkin carvings are so creative and fun. I love all the imaginative witches and other goblins. I enjoyed it when the kids in the family went trick or treating. There was such an exciting atmosphere in the air. It was especially fun when the weather cooperated. I can only remember one Halloween when it was freezing, raining, and windy. Otherwise, it is fun when most everyone gets involved. The adult shots are especially enjoyed (by the adults, of course.)
Now on to Thanksgiving. This is a time for reflection, and family and friend time. It is great to get everyone together and catch up on life, or just chill over a wonderful feast. No presents at this time makes it especially relaxing and joyful.
And, the big one, Christmas. What a beautiful and wonderful holiday. I especially like to decorate and prepare for this holiday. The secret is to try to get things accomplished early. This is always a challenge in my household. There are fun concerts, special events such as parties to attend, and, of course, gift shopping. Let’s not forget there is also present wrapping and perhaps cookie baking. It makes me tired just writing this. I am one of those people who always find it a challenge to accomplish all this in a timely fashion, but I work hard each year to meet all the demands of the season without getting too stressed. But, it is still my favorite holiday. I find it awfully hard to take down the Christmas decorations because they create such a nice atmosphere, and let’s not mention how much time it takes to get them up.
Each holiday has a meaning and should not be shortchanged by mixing them all together.
So, for those of you who are still celebrating Halloween, we have now also passed Thanksgiving and guess what it is Christmas. So, focus on Christmas, enjoy this fun time of the year, and enjoy Christmas by itself. St. Patrick’s Day and Valentine’s Day are just around the corner, and there will be plenty of time to get ready for these days.
Keep it on time and remember, Less is more.
