No More White Elephant Gifts

I can truthfully say that I can’t remember ever receiving a gift that I didn’t like or appreciate.  I always feel the thought behind the gift is what really counts.

One gift that I thought was interesting was a birdhouse that one of my grandmas gave me for confirmation.  It was a nice birdhouse, but sort of odd for a confirmation gift.  At least she didn’t forget me and made an effort.

My favorite gift was a poinsettia that I received from my dad. I had Lisa during the Christmas season. He brought a beautiful pointsettia up to the hospital after I gave birth to our  first daughter.  I felt this was such a sweet, thoughtful thing for him to do seeing that he never bought presents for anyone by himself.  He always had us girls purchase any gifts that he needed.  It was also funny when he said about my giving birth to his granddaughter, “We aren’t going to do this every year are we?”

I personally feel that gift giving is overrated or underthought!!  When you have to buy a gift for someone just because it is a birthday or Christmas I feel it should be more personalized than it seems to be on some occasions.  I don’t necessarily have the correct answer to this situation, but more personalized gifts seem to be more appropriate.  If you know someone well enough to buy them a present, it would be nice to know what type of things they are into or would like.  For example, in our family you would not buy our youngest daughter gold jewelry when you know for certain that she is very specific on wearing nothing but silver.  Or if someone decorates in earth tones, don’t purchase a pink afghan.

Also, when putting a small dollar amount on gifts to give seems to be a waste of time and money.  In my shopping experience you just can’t find anything worthwhile for under $10.00.

(Who needs another white elephant gift to put up in the attic?

Personally, donating money to a worthwhile cause seems to be a wonderful way of gifting someone that you are really unsure of their tastes or needs.

Here’s to another season of hysterical gift giving.  Merry Christmas!
