Payback’s a Bitch
I love giving and/or doing surprises. Unfortunately, when you are famous for doing this, you find that those whom you have surprised are waiting in the wings to reciprocate to surprise you.
On this one occasion, I had a co-worker who was a blast and a half. I should have expected something coming from her, but, of course, I didn’t.
She, Elaine, had two brothers who lived in Alaska. She would always talk about the happenings with the wild animals in that area, and wowed us with some pretty unusual stories. Well, she came to work and told my other co-worker and me that Bret, her son, had always wanted to have snakes. So, one day, one of her brothers sent him a package of snake eggs from Alaska. She talked about how he was watching them every day to see if they were hatching. Then one day they went missing, and Elaine found them tucked under his pillow. Now, in my little brain, all I could imagine is these creepy, squiggly snakes hatching and running around his bed.
So, a couple of days later, I came to work, opened the office refrigerator to put my lunch in it, and discovered a package with writing that resembled snake eggs on it, along with a gruesome-looking picture of a snake. I am so nosy and just had to touch it. When I did it, it made a noise, like a squiggly movement. I panicked, threw the bag up in the air, slammed the refrigerator door on it, and screamed. Then, to make matters worse, all I could imagine was these little snakes slithering around on the floor, which caused me to practically climb up a file cabinet so they wouldn’t get me. Elaine and my other coworker came into the file room where I was and expressed their concern, as I was panicked. They had me repeat several times the sound that came from the bag, and tried to calm me down. About then, my boss, who by the way had a client in his office, came out to me and wanted to know what the hell all the racket was about. I told him the story and how horrible it was. Now everyone was laughing, my boss said, That’s a joke. I truly didn’t believe him until I realized he was right. Boy, was I taken for a ride. I had truly been taken, and the surprise was on me.
