Is it a Cult?
I had a spiritual/religious experience when my oldest daughter, Lisa, went to college. Being what I liked to imagine myself at that time as a knowledgeable, with-it mom. Now when I mentally sent her off to college I was all prepared to try to handle the expected topics of drugs, alcohol, and sex. This is what seemed to be the most heard-about topics of my peers with college-bound children. Well, I was one of the lucky ones (tongue in cheek). I got religion.
This might sound like a prayer being answered, but guess what, it wasn’t. First of all, I hadn’t prepared myself for this and couldn’t even, if I tried, to handle a knowledgeable conversation on the subject. I spent many many hours on the phone with Lisa defending my belief. She felt that she was very informed, and she was. But, she seemed to carry it too far. Her preaching just made the scene to an argument. It seemed the big argument that she continued to state was that if you didn’t do things a certain way you were not a Christian.
Well, this was also during the time that Cults were a thing on the news and scared me to death. My mom and I spent many, many weekends going to church with Lisa in Eau Claire. Mom did take note that they all seemed really happy.
We talked to our pastor in Beaver Dam to determine if this was a topic to be concerned about. He later confirmed, after a meeting with Lisa, that she had her head on straight.
I guess the unknowing is so scary especially when it is with your kids.
