Holes with Eyes

holes with eyesGrandchildren offer so many interesting and fun stories.

Picture this. It is a cold and dreary late October evening.  It is just starting to get dark.  The wind was blowing and was whistling through the trees. There was an almost full moon.  It was a typical late fall evening.

I have a pond in my backyard that once had goldfish in it.  Since it was getting cold out, it was time to take them out of the pond and bring them into the house.  My two oldest grandsons, Brad and Nate were having a day at Grandpa and Grandmas.  They heard me discussing this job and decided they wanted to help get the fish in the house.

We all put on warm jackets and proceeded to go to the backyard.  First, there was Brad who was seven years old, and Nathan, who was four, was following.  I held back behind the boys as I was enjoying their interaction with each other.  Brad was saying to his intense, wide-eyed little brother, to be careful.  He said to be extra careful when you go over the holes in the lawn as if you look closely you will see sets of yellow piercing eyes looking out at you.  The two of them were focused and carefully checked every step they took they wouldn’t step in the holes with the eyes.

Well, this was too much for me.  I wish I had a picture of this because while I was walking behind them and with them being so intense I couldn’t resist and let out a blood-curdling scream.  Gads it is hard writing this because their reaction was so funny that I laugh just recounting this.  (bad grandma again)  When I screamed the boys became hysterical, turned around, and proceeded to run back to the back door.  To say Brad was mad at me would be an understatement.  Brad ran past me as I grabbed his jacket while trying to let him know this was just a joke.  He walked out of it leaving me hanging on to an empty jacket.  Again, Nate just ran with Brad to safety.  For some reason that was the last time they offered to get the fish!

I just couldn’t help it.  It was such a great opportunity to create another bad grandma moment. I just couldn’t pass up this great opportunity for a good laugh for years to come!
