Nicknames from the Heart
As a child, nicknames seem to run rampant. Kids like to pick apart anyone and everyone’s names to either tease or torment them.
My name is Sandra, Sandy for short. The only time I ever heard or hear the name Sandra is if I am in trouble or someone is upset with me.
When I was in grade school I had a t-shirt with Myrtle the Turtle on it. So, for the duration of the life of that t-shirt, I was called Mrytle by just my dad.
Then the older kids jumped on the bandwagon and called me Mouse Turd since my last name was Meister.
Having surpassed all those stupid nicknames I became Sceeter to my boyfriend. That was his loving name for me and I liked it. Now, having been married to him for a very long time I find when he says, “SANDY”, he is really saying “Dumb Shit”. You know like, “Well, SANDY, you know this is the wrong way”. In my mind, he is actually saying, “Well DUMB SHIT, you know this is the wrong way.”
I like to call people by their proper names, with the exception of my grandkids, one is Bradley Bug, for Brad, Nader Bader for Nathan; Gracie Lou for Jessica, Luka Paduka for Lukas, Kadon Androoshka for Kadon, and Aubrianna for Aubrey. Then there is little Lukas which to me is Andre. This is really his middle name, but no one uses this except for me. These are all done by me with a loving intention.
When naming a baby you always have to consider how his name is going to be destroyed. That seems to be the most important part of name planning. If it is done with a good intention and not to be hurtful it can be fun.
Is anyone ever really called by their assigned name? Probably not!
