No Black Friday Please!

I love how our family does the holidays…  Each of us gets a holiday to organize and coordinate – for example, Mom’s house for Christmas, my house for Easter, and Lisa’s house for Thanksgiving.  We used to do Easter at Judy’s till she moved away and then I got that holiday… Now that she’s back, we’ll have to reorganize the holiday schedule somewhat.
I LOVE Thanksgiving!  There are some traditions that just can’t be ignored on this holiday and they involve food…   Grandma Is always had thanksgiving at her house and made things a certain way.  Now that she is gone – Lisa has done a great job in keeping up those standards.  Most important are the lumpy potatoes.  Another favorite is the brown and serve dinner rolls. These may not seem like a big deal to some, but to me, these are VERY important.
What else do I think about Thanksgiving?  Food is the first thing that comes to mind.  I’m very much a creature of habit and love to keep things the same year after year.  I also love having a holiday that reminds us to be thankful for all we have.  So often, we are running crazy each day that we forget how lucky we are.  An example of running crazy is Black Friday.

Black Friday is the stupidest thing ever invented.  What value is there to stand in line at Walmart or any other store, with hundreds of crazed shoppers?   So you save some money – is it really worth it?  I for one have done Black Friday once and ONLY once.  I swore I would never, EVER, put myself thru that hell again.

My night started out by having to leave Thanksgiving early so I could get home and get some sleep so I could get up at 2 am to do the shopping.  My first stop was Kohls.  When I got there, the checkout line wrapped around the entire store!  I had a few items and realized that if I stayed in line, I’d miss any of the other stores.  So – I left my purchases and tried the next store…  Walmart.  OMG – what a cluster.  I had a few items in my cart and when I went to check out – there were so many people – I could barely see the checkout lines.  So – I left my cart where it sat and tried the next store.  When I got to the last store, there was a line of people waiting to get in…  I got in line and after about 30 minutes of waiting – someone informed me that I had to get a ticket for any item I was interested in purchasing!  OMG – I’d wasted 30 minutes just standing there…  What a zoo!  Well – I got into the store and wasn’t able to get anything that I had intended to get.  During my entire Black Friday experience – I managed to pick up ONE thing!  What a waste of time!!  Never again!

I’d much rather spend my holiday enjoying my family and then getting a decent night’s sleep and enjoying my day off on Friday!  Black Friday is just not worth it in my opinion!
